Early Colonial Silver Porringer by Samuel Vernon of Newport, Rhode Island. Circa 1725-30. Condition is extraordinarily good. Vernon was born in December 1683 and died in 1737. He became a Freeman in 1714. He was appointed by the Assembly to settle land controversy in 1726 when he also assisted the Governor in investigating health conditions of the colony. Very rare. Original shaded initials of original owner. E over I & E on front of handle. Vernon's mark on back of handle in a heart cartouche, SV over cross and on the inside of the bowl. See Beldon, page 422. Great patina. 4 7/8 inches in diameter. 7 1/8 inches, to end of handle.
