Early Papier Mache Snuff Box - Weary Coffee Drinker
Fabulous large papier mache snuff box, hand painted, depicting a weary looking fellow in his night clothes drinking a cup of coffee. The inscription on the bottom right is in script and reads "the black draught" referring to coffee of course. The writing is clearly visible, in person, but was impossible to photo as it is written in red on a dark background. Circa 1810, this piece is in excellent condition and measures 4" diameter. The inside appears to have been gilded at one time and some of the gilding has worn off a bit and is visible in the photo.
