probably Nishimochida kiln, Edo period 19th century Wheel thrown. Covered in black, dark brown and white glazes formulated so as to pull away from each other during firing. This created a mottled effect called 'dakatsu'( a firing technique which goes back to the 17th century). Over this rough and distorted surface delicate flowers and lattice work in overglaze enamels and gold. Japan 17th Century Height 66cm Heavily potted tall vase in hatchet-sheath shape. Wheel thrown. Slight spout formed on lip. An interesting subtle detail is the notches formed on the handles that correspond to the ringed notches on the body of the vase. The massive size of this vase reflects the taste of the Daimio for extravagant display. Chinese ,Qing dynasty length 6.3cm height 2.9cm The lion rests his paw on a ball, as he is often depicted. The Chinese used a toggle in the same way that the Japanese used a netsuke. The Japanese did,in fact, often use toggles as netsukes.

Chinese, Qing dynasty diameter 3.7cm Open work carving of a miniature coconut. The round dried coconut still rolls about in the shell. A phoenix in flight amongst the clouds. Yixing Qing dynasty circa 1875 height 10cm An old prunus stump with a split in the bark showing the texture of the wood beneath. New young flowering shoots emerging on both sides. Spout and handle are branch forms. minor fretting to lid rim. a tiny chip on the upper edge(visible in photo). Chen Shing Hwa's book on Yixing ware (in Chinese) has a similar type of teapot(also with rim fretting) pages 97 and 98.

Yixing Early 20th century length 11cm height 7cm The elegantly robed scholar leaning against a tree stump. At his side is a goose, which is associated with letter writing. The goose's knob is painted red and Wang Xizhi hair and collar are highlighted in black. The goose was a symbol of Wang Xizhi and all the associations of brushwork and calligraphy.
