probably Nishimochida kiln, Edo period 19th century Wheel thrown. Covered in black, dark brown and white glazes formulated so as to pull away from each other during firing. This created a mottled effect called 'dakatsu'( a firing technique which goes back to the 17th century). Over this rough and distorted surface delicate flowers and lattice work in overglaze enamels and gold. Japan 17th Century Height 66cm Heavily potted tall vase in hatchet-sheath shape. Wheel thrown. Slight spout formed on lip. An interesting subtle detail is the notches formed on the handles that correspond to the ringed notches on the body of the vase. Japan, 18th century length 7.1cm, width 4.6cm, Height .9cm The pierced cover with a many flowered peony bush is delicately chased and inscribed. Japan ,Edo period 1838-1845 Diameter 6.2cm Height 3.4cm The mark on the cover reads 'Zen', the artistic name for Komaru-Tatsu no-shin. See Catalogue of the Morse Collection, page 314 for identical mark. The mark on the bottom is,according to Morse"obscure". Overglaze enamels in yellow, green and aubergine. Known to the Japanese as 'Kochi ware'.

Kyoto early 20th century Diameter 7.3cm height 2.7cm The lid entirely covered in a fishnet design which extends over the sides of the lid and box. The design was painted in underglaze blue with the lid in place. Therefore, the lid must be placed in only one position for the design to correctly aline. Kyoto Early 19th century diameter 6.8cm height 5cm Eiraku Hozen was well known for his Kochi wares. Buff stoneware overglazed with decoration in low relief,phoenix and flowers.
