Heavily potted tall vase in hatchet-sheath shape. Wheel thrown. Slight spout formed on lip. An interesting subtle detail is the notches formed on the handles that correspond to the ringed notches on the body of the vase. The massive size of this vase reflects the taste of the Daimio for extravagant display. Eiraku Hozen was well known for his Kochi wares. Buff stoneware overglazed with decoration in low relief,phoenix and flowers. Gold leaf was attached to the flower on the lid and then glazed in brown. Hotei a fat jolly Buddhist monk who lived in the late 9th and early 10th centuries in China was also a popular deity of the folk religion of China and Japan.
