The wooden Memorial heads of the Benin are believed to predate the 16th century bronze examples. In over 100 years of research, scholars have not been able to demonstrate otherwise. The eyes and tribal marks above each eye are inlaid with coconut shell. This example has a museum acquisition number (the number seven written in the European fashion). A very similar example can be seen in "The Art of the Benin",catalogue for an exhibition at the C ...click for details

Ivory Coast, Africa 19th Century Height 60cm.
Great skill in metal casting is apparent in this Dan stilt dancer. Even the texture of the binding around his legs, and on the stilts is discernible. The huge head-dress, as long as his head and torso combined, give him an even greater presence than he would have with only being on stilts.
Free standing stilt dancers of the Dan are seldom seen. The Brooklyn Museum is fortunate to have two in its collection. Another one is in a pub ...click for details

North Sumatra 19th century
The water buffalo horn is carved on one end as an open mouthed dragon. The eyes are of bone. The back of the horn is carved with a tortoise, upon whose back the world sits. A medicine horn such as this was used for defensive magic by a sorcerer diviner(datu).
The most interesting feature about this horn is that at the base opposite the dragon is what looks like a stupa. Combining a Buddhist monument on an ancient tribal art object is a rarity. Believing ...click for details
