Pair of Tonquin Ironstone plates c.1825
Pair of ironstone plates with chinoiserie decoration of flowering plants with a flower border and thin blue printed scallop border. Back marked with an elaborate blue printed mark of a crown over what looks like a log with a garland of flowers and a ribbon with the words, "TONQUIN CHINA." The pattern number '500' is written in orange on both plates. The factory is unidentified. Diameter 8 1/2 inches (21.5 cm).

As is typical of ironstone, the blue is under glaze and the other colors overglaze enamels. An extravagant plant with multi-colored flowers grows from a Chinese rock. The dark blue is accented with gilding.

Condition: No cracks, hairlines, or repairs. Some knife scratches and wear to the orange enamel and gilding. The rims may have had a light brown enamel which is largely gone. One with a minute chip to the foot.

Pieces from this unknown factory are fairly rare. The quality of the work is high.
