This is a multi-piece sculpture of Noah's Ark by renowned Southern Artist Braxton Ponder. Ponder is a self-taught wood carver who began carving at age 71. He is featured in Kathy Moses book Outsider Art of the South on pages 49-52. This set includes giraffes, bears, camels, birds, leopards, tigers, dachshunds, rabbits and of course Noah and his wife. The ark has a removable roof and a front door that opens. The ark measures 10 1/2 x 18 3/4 x 7.
The figure is painted pink skin and is wearing a black short and jacket, while is brushing teeth. He has predominant ears, open mouth and two large teeth. It represents a “Shetani”, good and bad spirits they populate the spiritual world of the Makonde. 60 cm high, 21 cm wide and 23 cm long. Lilanga signature can be seen on the base of the carving.
