A wonderful sterling silver trout set in Towle's 1884 "Arlington" pattern. The handles are decorated in the repousse style with a profusion of roses and foliage. The decoration lends itself to being mixed with many of the repousse patterns from the Baltimore area. It is the blade of the trout knife, wonderfully decorated with an engraved trout leaping into the air after biting a lure (the entire casting rod in the background), that really sets these servers apart...

Acid-etched fluid and symmetrical leafing scrollwork pattern with copper traces; foot has scroll and flower repousse border. Victorian safari flask. Made by Gorham in Providence in 1896. Ovoid glass body. Top encased in leather with cutout tubular windows. Bottom has detachable sterling silver cup. Cover hinged and cork-lined. Holds 4 pints of chest-hair growing spirits—enough for everyone around the campfire. Fully marked including maker’s stamp, date symbol, no. S829, and volume. Handmade of colonial silver, this "mate" cup is of Uruguayan origin from the 1850-1870 period.
"Mate" is a special cup for drinking "yerba mate" a popular tea brewed from the leaves of a native holly (Ilex Paraguariensis). The perforated silver straw used for drinking the "mate" contains leaves carving.
Dimensions: 7.25" height (mate), diameter aprox. 3.25".
