Carved upright carved shaped like cricket bats and lashed onto crossed elements at either end serve as legs on this rack, which could be placed on the camel to load him up even more. Then, at safari's destination, the rig was placed in the tent, a top placed on top, to become a service table. Very practical! (For everyone but the poor camel...) Madagascar, circa 1900. African Ceremonial ritual wooden drum (Pinge), Senufo people, African Ivory Coast (Cote d'Ivoire), Korhogo region. Circa 1920-1950.

Entirely carved from one piece of wood, the sculpted figure depicting a bare breasted regal woman, seated on a stool, with upraised arms, an arched back, and a strong neck, gracefully supporting and balancing a drum on her head.

The drum is carved in low relief with symbols representing various animals, including crocodiles...

Antique, late 19th century, African Mangbetu or Zande, bow harp, Kundi.

The sound box (Resonator) of the harp is made of wood and covered with snake skin, with one round opening on the anterior surface, and small holes for the strings.

There are no holes in the neck for the tuning pegs since the strings were fastened to the neck by the loops...

Having lost most of its once clearly defined features, this now fragmented Dogon carving is still recognizable as being that of a standing ancestor. The head has retained its original crested shape though stylized facial features are barely discernible. The surface shows an encrusted, fatty patina with areas of dryness, sacrificial matter, and numerous root-like growths attached. This is a centuries old Malian carving made from a hard and heavy wood, and measuring 14"H (not including the mount)...

This particular pair can be found in the book by Hans Witte: 'Earth and the Ancestors, Ogboni Iconography', page 108, picture 1. H. 14,5 cm. Good wear and excellent patina.
