Very nice small handcrafted antique 19th century Koran box made of a silver bronze (or brass?) material with black niello enamel and applied metal decoration and gold overlay. The lid is hinged at the top – the hinge pin has corroded and needs to be replaced. Measures about 2-3/4 x 1-7/8 x 3/8 inches. Definitely from the Middle-East and possibly Persian in origin. Carved from gray schist and retaining most of the neck, this head appears to have once been part of a larger relief carving. The back of the head was probably attached to a larger stone background and was later chiseled off. The hair is wavy and the lips are bow shaped. There are no apparent cracks or repairs to the stone, but the lower left ear shows some small loss. Acquired in 1980 from the estate of a history professor who who traveled extensively and collected antiques...

This silver box, of lobed medallion form, has a hinged lid decorated with geometric and floral repousse work in prominent relief. The sides are incised with floral elements with a caligraphic cartouche in the front. The base is also incised with a floral design surrounded by a band of small repeating triangles. The entire box is fashioned from solid sheet silver. There is some wear and light tarnish.
