During the 1890s, Kozan employed his distinctive "fukie" painterly style for which he was known and honored. In this exquisite work, the lively portrayal of the songbirds is enhanced through the use of this novel technique - an innovation way before its time - resulting in this ceramic masterpiece...

19th century small netsuke of a sennin (Chinese sage) mobbed by four toads. For some unexplainable reason sennin’s face looks exactly like that of Lenin, although the netsuke is probably a humorous take on Gama sennin”s popularity with amphibians. Wonderful carving with great quality of facial expression and nice detailing - see the warty backs of the toads. Himotoshi (cord opening) goes under the belt on the back, old age lines...

Two-door cabinet with single drawer originating from a temple, Shanxi province, first half 18th century. The compact proportions and the division of the panelwork still breath the old Ming style, although the lacquer-techniques used make it more probable this cabinet was made shortly after 1700. The front is finished with an old red layer of lacquer over an older dark layer. Original hardware. The sides are finished in a greyish-black layer of clay-lacquer...
