An antique Japanese bamboo Ikebana basket in a barrel shape with dual double arm connected handle. The body is woven with multiple layered bamboo strips in a horizontal pattern which gives strength and tenacity to the piece as well as the symbolic nature of bamboo. The base is a bamboo rope foot with a star patterned bottom. Natural soot patina contrasted against chestnut brown highlights.

Beautifully plaited bamboo basket we think by Iizuka Sounsai of the famed Iizuka Family of reknown basket makers in the Taisho and Showa eras. It is not signed but exactly like the signed Kyokusho (Sounsai's art name) pc4 we have on the site. Circa 1920 – 1940. Iizuka Kyokusho was a brother of Iizuka Rokansai and Iizuka Hosai. A very unusual basket made of pine cones bound together on edge enclosed in the original wooden box dated New Years of Showa Six (1931) titled Chiyo no Matsukasa (Cones of the Ancient Pine). The basket is 20 cm (8 inches) diameter, 33.5 cm (13-1/4 inches) tall and comes with the original bamboo insert. It is in overall fine condition. I have never seen another like it.
