A very large mask of heavily carved wood covered in black lacquer with golden eyes dating from the mid Edo period (18th century). There are minor losses to the lacquer on the cheeks and along the edges typical of age. It is 37.5 x 30 cm (14-1/2 x 12 inches) and is in overall fine condition.

Reverberating Zen Temple Bell from a Buddhist Temple with lacquered stand with inscription on the bell reading, 'Showa 3' (ca.1929). Deep, sonorous sound. With red lacquered striker. Excellent condition. Stand and bell height: 67cm; bell: 24cm height and 37cm diameter.

Museum piece. Inscripted on the bell are two dates: Kiei 4 (ca. 1851) and Meiji 28 (Ca. 1895) along with donor names. We are not sure why there are two dates. Also written,it is from Gyoshin-ji Temple in Omi no Kuni which is the Edo Period Ca. (1614-1868) name for present day Shiga Prefecture next to Kyoto. Tip part of excavated ancient Japanese ritual phallic object called ‘Sekibo’ (lit. ‘Stone stick’) dated back to the Jomon period (ca. 14000-1000 BCE), attached with wooden stand with plaster inside of hole for stabilising. Total with stand: H 6 cm (2.36in), Sekibo itself: H 4.3 x 3 x 3 cm (1.69 x 1.18 x 1.18in). Cracks due to age as is. Slightly stained with its plaster at the bottom.
