An antique Choba Tansu (merchant chest) made entirely of Kirinoki (Paulownia) wood. All original bronze hardware. Three drawers with a pair of hinged doors that open to a spacious interior with two side by side drawers. This area was used to store the merchant records and books while all the drawers were used to secure valuables and provide easy access to merchant tools and accessories.

Netsuke - A finely carved ivory netsuke of a cluster of various shells, some of them with an inner life reminiscent of the famous clam’s dream story. A real cute, Kawai miniature Kyusu style teapot for green tea with a side handle, made in the tradition of (Otagaki) Rengetsu yaki, from Okasaki production center, Kyoto. Chamotte with a nice craquelure glaze. Size L 10 x h 4 cm. Otagaki Rengetsu (1791–1875) was a Buddhist nun, famous for her calligraphy but also for her production of ceramics for tea appreciation which she would embellish with her poems. Meiji 1868-1912. Good condition.

Japanese Antique small and charming censer. The lid is pierced for incense smoke and the finial handle is in the form of a mouse. The round-form body of the censer has three small handles and is decorated with raised medallion reserves each with a different animal: rabbit, ox and tiger.

A rare antique Japanese Sakata Hangai Tansu (captain's business transaction chest) made of Keyaki (Zelkova) and Kirinoki (Paulownia) woods. All original translucent Urushi lacquer with hand forged iron hardware. Security door with a working top lock and key that hides 6 interior drawers of varying sizes. Constructed using traditional dovetail Japanese joinery and hardened wood nails.

Similar use to a merchant Choba Tansu except the Hangai Tansu was seaworthy for travel on the open seas.
