This antique plaque, painted in 1879 by Jean Gauvin, depicts men and women of distinction in the eighteenth century, enjoying the surroundings near the Temple of Love in the gardens of Versailles. (The temple was built in 1778 on an artificial island in order to house Bouchardon's marble statue of the God of Love carving his bow from Hercules' club.) This antique plaque, signed Carlus, depicts a renaissance period courting scene with musicians entertaining a distinguished couple. Measures 11" by 7.75" and weighs 1 lbs. 8 oz. Excellent condition. There is some grime and light discoloration along the edges where covered by a prior frame. We believe this plaque dates from the very late 19th to early 20th century. Included here is a pair of nineteenth century porcelain decanters with hand-painted enamel and gilded decoration. No hallmarks other than red numerals on underside. Possibly by Jacob Petit. Each measures 7.25" high, 5" wide and 2.75" deep. Each are in excellent condition. Only known flaws are a chip to the base of one stopper, and a flake chip from the upper right side on the rear of one decanter.
