A rare late 19th century majolica pottery figurine of a musical frog, signed Jerome Massier Vallauris, France. Massier's factory closed in 1902 and this figurine dates to the late 1800s. It depicts a 5" tall frog playing a lute with folky hand painted details. Although I can't find this pattern in any of the Gien resource books, it is strikingly and beautifully decorated. The Romanesque or Renaissiance Revival swirls are punctuated with the typical satyr heads on each side, and all perch on the matching underplate.
The piece is in very fine condition, and both pieces are marked with a painted "Gien", and manufactured by that company in France. The cache pot measures 10" inside diameter, and 8 1/4" in height. The diameter of the underplate is 13 1/2"... Click for details
