A rare and elegant FAIENCE round box (MAJOLICA) with barbotine Figurals, this box is Museum Quality and probably dates to late 17th Century France. Inscribed in Latin around the rim, peasants circling the box,Fleur de Lis motif as well all in relief. It is believed that this may have been a commerative gift to guests at an important wedding. The baluster form is hand painted in blue, yellow, green, black, and iron red. Each are similarly decorated with a central cartouche made up of “C” scrolls framing a rural farm scene. Each urn is decorated with a painted collar around the rim and base with a date “1734”. The bottoms are unmarked. Condition: Very good, very small flake on one rim, other rim with repair. The description of the battle scene reads (and a few of the words are blurred) "Amadeo Settimo Uccide di propria mano a colpi d'Accetta Alain, ed Enrico Langlier, e feriscoe Trevet gentiluomo Inglese". The maker name, which is only partially visibly impressed on the reverse, seems to be DORTU & C.
