This antique Japanese paper stencil (Stencil B) has a wonderful design of irregularly placed, scattered flowers (wild flowers?) It is made of several layers of laminated handmade Japanese paper (made with "kozo," the inner bark of the mulberry bush) then treated with persimmon paste, and finally smoked to render it waterproof and tough. This is an extremely nicely executed fraktur type American folk art watercolor on paper of a multi-colored bird among flowers and leaves. Colors are vibrant, and there are no tears. There is, however, some surface wear and creasing to the paper, which is not at all unusual in these type works. There is also a stain which is strongly exaggerated in the photos, but is relatively unobtrusive when seen in person. The overall visual impression and impact is excellent. This is truly a wonderful piece of 19th century Victorian folk art. It is hand carved and hand painted wooden memorial lamb sitting on a carved wooden book. The lamb has, and yet is, a symbol of a child. This lamb, carved during Victorian times, sat on the mantle in tribute to a child who had died. It is in excellent condition with normal expected age shrinkage around the base of the neck. It has only minor paint loss.
