This shaving box is a truly wonderful and unusual piece of Americana, and was used to hold and sharpen razors. It was not a common household object, and not many survived from the 18th century. Nina Fletcher Little discusses these charming boxes in her book, Neat and Tidy, and shows a similar example.
This particular example is made from birch, and has chip carved saw-tooth edges, and, on three sides, scribed designs. It has three sliding compartments, and also, amazingly, still retains it... Click for details

19th Century pottery brown glazed bundt bakery dish in a rare heart shape. It is possibly redware, but since there is no chipping to reveal the pottery, I can't be sure. This item was lovingly used as can be seen from the blackened bakery residue. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. Size is 10-1/2" wide x 11-1/2" long x 3-3/4" deep. This would make a great addition to a county-style kitchen decor.

This silhouette is the type known as cut, meaning that it is cut from black paper and then pasted to the background. This pretty woman was a member of the Root family of Northport Long Island and was purchased from a descendant. The frame is Victorian and the mat appears to be cut and colored by hand. Some might want to remat it professionally, by I thought the existing and contemporaneous mat to have a great deal of charm. Dimensions are 9 inches by 8 inches.
