What a beauty! This fabulous art glass epergne was created in Stourbridge, England by Stevens & Williams, circa 4th quarter of the 19th century. It features a delightful swirl pattern in pink and chartreuse, and ruffled edges. Three hanging trumpets surround a gilded bronze crane with a snake clasped in his talons. This is truly a unique piece. It bears an etched mark on the base, which is a bit faded due to age. Overall, this piece is in great condition, aside from a bit of scuffing to the base... This example is an interesting gourd shape with four punched ‘dimples’ and is mounted with a silver plated neck band and stopper with an aesthetic style finial appropriate to period. The stopper is mounted with a cork than can and has been changed. Maker unknown, but according to one of the world's foremost experts in vaseline glass, this piece was made in England or somewhere in northern United Kingdom circa 1860-1880, and done in the 'Regency' cut, an older cut from england. The glass has been leaded, and it rings like a bell when struck with your fingernail.

This is a rare example of an English art glass bowl made to fit in the center of a gas fixture or chandelier. Extraordinarily detailed etching, far more detailed that found on similar patterns of Sandwich glass. Etching like this can be found on plate C156 in Grover's "English Cameo Glass". It measures 9 in. across with a depth of 6 1/2 in.
