Museum quality Russian lacquered wood box top, made by the firm of N. Lukutin of Fedoskino. This piece dates from about 1880 -1890. This piece was once the top of a box, but is presently mounted in an ornate gilded Rococo frame dating to about 1890. The back of the piece is signed by N. Lukutin. The hand-painted signature includes three Imperial double-headed Russian eagles painted in gold, with each holding a shield with an "A" on it, indicating appointment to the household of Czar Alexander II... An antique carved ostrich egg with the design of several views of classical buildings around the circumference. Very likely a souvenir of the Grande Tour. There are three views of the structures done in excellent detail - and between these vignettes is carved scroll work of grapes and grape leaves. Antique Thai primitive sticky rice pan. These hard wood trays were handmade by the villagers of Northern Thailand. Each one has a unique look and was carved from a single solid piece of wood with primitive tools. Once used by the villagers to spread the sticky rice on to get the proper moisture content. A fine VICTORIAN ENGLISH BONE SPANGLED LACE BOBBIN. Circa 1860. The bobbin has been hand carved and decorated in colors of red, green, orange and black. The spangle has six beads. The name "SAMUEL" has been worked in a pin-prick design. The bobbin measures 4 1/2 inches in length. In excellent condition.

This is very attractive North China Deer. It was carved by an unknown carver in Hebei (Beijing is surrounded by Hebei) and brought to market here. The wood is called wu-mu in Chinese, this is ebony in English. Ebony is used rather sparingly in China for smaller objects (we have seen it in rulers). This statue is rarely seen in Chinese wooden art.
