A charming bit of rustic handicraft is this small snuff-box made of carefully built-up thin layers of serrated birch bark held in place by many tiny brass nails. Small cut-out circles reveal a surprise of blue underneath, and a trace of shiny brown at the base suggests that it was probably originally bound like that all around the top and bottom in that manner. The original leather thong still forms the handle for the top. Early to mid-Nineteenth Century, probably Tyrolean or Alpine. Fine, u... Click for details

Very rare mauchlineware napkin ring featuring an excellent transfer design depicting and titled "Halifax River, Daytona, Fla." Undoubtedly British, this string box in ebonized boxwood boasts a central band of fine trompe l’oeil beadwork that has a few stabilized flaws. All in all, it is in fine shape and is an excellent example of Victorian handicraft, and retains its ivory grommet at the string hole. Approximately 4-12 inches high and three inches in diameter.

British, probably early to middle Nineteenth Century. Approximately two inches high and 3-1/4 inches in diameter.

The witches’ prophecy of Macbeth’s downfall is recalled in this little wooden quaich, or double-handled drinking cup. The end was to come when Birnam forest would come to Dunsinane, the king’s castle, and that comes about when Malcolm has the soldiers disguise themselves in branches from the forest’s trees. As described on one side of this Mauchline woodenware quaich, the elegant little gem was turned from Birnam wood for Andrew Bookseller of Dunkeld; on the other side there is also the app...
