Museum quality Russian lacquered wood box top, made by the firm of N. Lukutin of Fedoskino. This piece dates from about 1880 -1890. This piece was once the top of a box, but is presently mounted in an ornate gilded Rococo frame dating to about 1890. The back of the piece is signed by N. Lukutin. The hand-painted signature includes three Imperial double-headed Russian eagles painted in gold, with each holding a shield with an "A" on it, indicating appointment to the household of Czar Alexander II... A very fine Vishniakov lacquer dresser box, the domed top decorated with a peasant couple standing by a well in a pastoral setting. The scene is beautifully decorated, with fine attention to detail. Metallic paints highlight the figures’ clothing. The interior of the box is coated with a dark, rusty red color. This set of inro and netsuke is approximately from the mid to end of 1900s. The inro has 5 compartments (not including the lid) and it is beautifully lacquered and painted in makie style. The design depicts phoenix (hoo) and paulownia. The style of inro is Edonari and the netsuke is kagami-buta style. The ivory and bronze of the netsuke is loose. This is an interesting item. Bodkins were necessary tools for lacing and threading ribbon, tape, or cord through a casing. Before the mid 19th century both men and women used them for closing their clothing. This case was used to carry a bodkin, and any other necessary tools that would fit into it. It is black lacquer with an inlay pattern of gold diamonds. There is an attractive gold band round the open edges with 2 continental gold punch marks that I cannot read or photograph well.. Elegant early Victorian lacquered papier-mache round tray with Chinoiserie decoration depicting a court scene. The design, worked in metallic gold, silver and copper, shows three ladies in their garden overlooking the sea.
