The distinctive design of the outer edging is typical of New Mexican decoration usually found on furniture. Two nail holes at the base of the upright where it was probably nailed to the roof of the iglesia(church). Paint was used only on the front side. The cross is made in two sections. The Magdalene has a straight nose,drilled eyes, an unsmiling mouth, an abundance of wavy hair and very heavy folds in her mantle. These five characteristics denote the figure as being made in the Lyons-Rhone area of France. She is kneeling as she is usually depicted in front of the cross. Originally part of a group sculpture. Beautifully carved wood figure or santos of a monk, possibly the Dominican friar, Saint Vincent, wearing a hooded cape and the monastic tonsure and holding a church or reliquary. The wood has a nice aged patina and is dense and very heavy. Condition is good except for the loss of the right hand, and some cracks in the wood consistent with a piece of this age, probably mid 19th century. Height is 19" Base is octagonal: 7" wide and 5.5" deep.
