This is a wonderful piece that was salvaged from a long bench. It is in the Flemish style, or that of French Aubusson, but this is not a period piece. It does have age however, and I would guess it to date from the early 20th century. The central motif appears to be a coat of arms. There are a pair of Rubenesque nude women flanking the centerpiece, which is kind of fun, and the flowers and foliage typical of that style. The ground behind the figures is dark brown, bordered in grey (which is... Click for details

After her death in 1924, the collection -- including textiles, furniture and porcelain – was left with her family until 1939, when it was seized by the Nazi government and given to the Staatliche Kunstgewerbemuseum in Vienna (now known as the Museum für Angewandte Kunst (MAK). I rarely feature beaded deco purses, but this one completely enslaved me! The ultimate deco purse, worked in steel and glass beads, it is wonderful in every way. From the stylish pediment celluloid frame with bronze highlights to the fabulous abstract landscape executed in steel and blue glass beads, the purse is a design masterpiece. The lower section looks like a cubist scene; blue glass and steel beads lend it a boldness to balance the frame. Above is an almost lacy forest and sky motif, ... Click for details

French Late 17th to Early 18th century
Width 16.5 cm Height 14.5 cm.
Goat skin was used to make this man's purse.Dyed red then tool stamped and finally gold leaf stamped. The clasp and chains are steel. It is a two pleat accordion design. Inside the purse is a small side pocket with flap. The amazing thing about this morocco leather is its pristine condition. Most often tooled leather from this period has deteriorated, but this purse has been well looked after.
