An early 19th century needlework landscape scene, featuring a thatched cottage by a river. The scene is filled with wonderful details: there’s a dog in front of the house, a bridge over the river and swans a swimming. And on the opposite bank, there’s a shepherd playing a flute to his sheep! The picture is set in a gilt gessoed frame, which exhibits losses – chips, scratches, cracks. The needlework is in perfect condition and the colors are wonderfully fresh.

Fine and rare antique Rabat embroidery, offered in overall good condition (one small area of discoloration, one very small hole). It measures approximately 30" by 37" and is, as always with this sort of embroidery, reversible. This piece appears to date from the 19th century (most of the pieces we encounter are early 20th century productions.) This type of textile from Morocco is extremely rare and collectable. Antique Moroccan dowry embroidery (Rabat, late 19th, early 20th), completely reversible, very good condition--that is in my experience exceptional, these pieces are generally fragmentary or worn when they reach the market-- measuring 40" x 56". Very rare in complete and untouched condition. This type of weaving was generally used by Moroccan Jewish families during the elaborate wedding ceremony (cf: "Jewish life in Morocco", where a similar embroidery is pictured).
