Patriotic Stars and Stripes quilt that is extraordinary in every way. Eye dazzling design; signed "W.A. Brant" and dated 1891 - both in quilting stitches. There was a patriotic movement at this time as veterans of the Civil War were celebrating its 25th anniversary. Machine quilted and hand appliqued. Equally striking design whether seen vertically or horizontally. Measures 70" x 80"; Maryland origin.

This essentially Three Patch quilt pattern is done with a wonderful use of lights and darks to create a strong diagonal, much like a Straight Furrows. I have searched for a name for this pattern and see it called both The X quisite (sic) and A Quilt of Variety. They strike me as grandiose names for such a simple pattern, however effective it is. Front is suiting wools; back is cotton. A few very tiny holes which I do not find distracting, but one could mend them if desired. Measures 72" square. ... Click for details
