New Mexico 1st half of 19th century height 89cm width 37cm.
Each chair was constructed by mortise and tenon. The back slats were joined by the use of closed mortise. Original rawhide seats and backs are secured by original blacksmith's nails. No later additional nails were used. One chair with later corner blocks. The extensive wear on the front stretchers of all three chairs indicate that they were much used through the years. Set of four matching Hitchcock-style, caned side chairs in maple and curly maple, having a crest rail scrolled in the center and flanked by extended ring turning. Below the crest rail is a wide,shaped cross rail. The stiles are shaved on the front and have ring scribing below. The caned seat is flared and scrolled at the front. The front stretcher has a central ball with flanking tapered ring turning. Plain cylindrical stretchers are on each side of the legs, and one is in the rear.
