A late 17th/early 18th C. Huang Hua Li (yellow rosewood) coffer, a rare and beautiful wood. The lower panel of the coffer, was converted to a drawer, probably in England, in the 19th C. The drawer face is the original panel, I have tried to show the joint on the drawer face in one of the photos. The top 3 drawers appear original. There may be a 6 inch by 3 inch carved molding which drops down on either side of the skirt replaced, probably at the same time they did the lower drawer.

Every piece has a good story. This one is no exception. When we first went to Hong Kong,in the 80's,we were on our way to the Philippines.Carolyn and I would lay over for a day or two to get over jet lag.We would roam up and down Wyndham St for hours, checking out all of the shops. We weren't really buying for our shop;but we did get some pieces for ourselves. We still have some of these pieces, but others we have parted with. Not that this has much to do with this gate bench, but in some ways it does...
