An unusual and nice quality c1890s Japanese lacquer and hand inlaid candle stand table with removable tripod legs and a folding top. This travelling table measures 11-3/4" across the finely inlaid top, which has a pegged swivel support which fits into the slotted top of the 20-1/2" table column. The other end of the support has slots for the insertion of the legs, bringing the height up to 28-1/2". In glowing, lustrous cinnabar lacquer, this elegant temple table has two drawers, lacquered black within, that slide all the way through. They are decorated with raised cloud-form plaques in all four fronts; this motif is repeated on the sides of the table. Fine carved diaper patterns adorn the sweeping legs and edges of the top. The piece measures approximately 35-3/4 inches by 23-1/4 inches by 29-3/4 inches high. There are few small flaws and those only minor. Japanese, Meiji Period.

Originally made as a copper screened container for "fresh food," before the days of refrigeration, this item which demonstrates the form and function of Japanese design has been tastefully converted to a lamp with shoji paper. It's suitable either as a floor lamp or a table lamp.
