Marked "Zekman Galw Warszawa" 13.5" high, 5,.5" wide at base. At one time these candlesticks were silverplated, traces still remain. A few minor dings. Purchase price includes polishing if you wish.These candle sticks fit in immigrant"s suitcases--that is how they probably arrived from Poland

These are very old candlesticks, most likely pre-Victorian. The pair show variations in size and form and they have wood-pegged bases, plus the rich patina that only great age can impart to wood. Their whimsical ornaments identify them as souvenirs of a visit to Lincoln, county town of Lincolnshire and home to a famous cathedral, which was actually the world's tallest building from around 1300 to 1549 but is better known for a piece of stonework called the Lincoln Imp. Along with the flowing, organic lines of Art Nouveau, this graceful candlestick shows Arts and Crafts influence in the simplicity of its fabrication. To form the stylized calla flower at center, a sheet of silver was artfully wrapped, seamed and folded, while the engraved ivy leaves, each slightly different, were also cut from sheet silver.
