This is an antique, weather barometer/altimeter made out of brass. The maker is “D.L.S. Special, The Topley Company. Ottawa. ONT. It has the original glass intact and faced dial with an adjustable outer altitude scale graduated to 8000 feet. The instrument is compensated for temperature variations and has an inset screw on the back for setting local atmospheric pressure. Period Antique German Ships model, this "antique ship model" was handmade in Germany around 1840. Fully rigged with hand made rope and each plank was individually made and attached with handmade brass pins. This is a large ships model. The Portland Packet, Capt. Taylor beating off a French Cutter Privateer near Barbadoes. Designed and engraved by Ethies. Published 24 th April 1797 by John Fairburn, 146 Mineries, London. Cutter 16 guns 16 men; Packet 10 guns 32 men. All that is printed below the engraving. Slight discoloration in the center,but it looks worse in the picture. It has been rematted. Board backing. Great engraving showing action, a must if you are a marine collector.
