This rare Samson & Mordan Owl Retractable Pencil is a very unusual piece. The design is of a detailed silver owl with large opalescent glass eyes. When the top ring is pulled up, a pencil slides out of the body at the bottom. The owl is beautifully engraved and very realistic in appearance. The piece is marked S. English gilt metal inkwell in the form of stacked balls on an onyx base. The metal top of the glass removeable inkpot is engraved with the name T Reed & Co Cambridge. Height is 4" Diameter of onyx base is 7.5" Condition is good with wear to the gilt on the cannonballs.

A wonderful aide de memoir (carnet de bal) of brushed steel with gilded embellishments allowing a pattern of foliage to show through from the metal beneath. On the front, reverse painted on glass, is an extremely detailed scene of the Tuilleries, with the Louvre in the background. 3 3/4" by 2 3/8"
