Small wooden carving of excellent quality: tiger with flaming groin, looking back and fiercely growling, standing on a rock between stalks of bamboo. Beautiful piece of hard wood, some red color around the mouth, eyes inlaid in brass. Although carved in three dimensions, it is meant to be seen frontally only. Japan, Meiji period, 19th century.

Details: A good sized and unusual example of a bronze seated Buddha from probably the Lang Chang region of Laos. Buddha is seated in Maravijaya upon a high stepped, incised, lotus base. He is deep in meditation with his silver inlaid eyes in trance like concentration above smiling crimson lips. His body is powerful with strong broad shoulders and arms tapering down to a slim waist and muscular legs. His hands are in Bhumisparsha mudra with typically Lao equal length fingers. ...
