Old oliphant, carved at its top in the shape of a king sitting cross-legged on a round stool and holding a scepter with both hands, surmounting two slaves in relief on each side, its back opening in the shape of a mouthpiece, and ending at its base in a large opening. This is a single geometic gold weight made and used by the Ashanti about the turn of the last century. The gold trade was concentrated in West Africa and directly related to the slave trade. It is made of brass and is shaped as a rectangle with a raised pattern on one side. It is 17.8mm(.70") long, 15.5mm(.61") wide, and 7.3mm(.29") thick. It predate the more elaborate figural examples. This is a rare Ashanti cast brass bracelet collected by Armitage around the turn of the century. It had some age at that time and may easily date before 1880. It is 2" across (inside) and made with a heavy spiral twist with incised faceted terminals and central segments like the gold weights, cast in one piece. Intricately made in seven pieces with two shaped frames which enclose the ankle and lock with the tension from connection to the master chain. Additional raised eyes with side loops for securing other restraints. An ingenious "quick release" configuration which safely restrains the captive in transit but can be removed at rest.
