Bakuba peoples, Congo, mid-twentieth century. This hat was worn only by the Noblemen to the Bakuba court. Woven from raffia palm fiber (Raffia Viniferis), among the Bakuba it was the men, interestingly, who did the weaving. In addition, in this example, the rare purple color (a sign of Royalty or Nobility) was obtained by the mimeograph machine dyes of the missionaries, most commonly. Measuring approximately 6" x 4" (15 x 10 cm.) and in overall very good condition, there is some staining whi... Click for details

Bakuba or Kuba Peoples, Congo. This is a superb, very large and very unusual basket of the Bakuba. A hallmark of Bakuba basketry is the transition from square to round, or from rectangular to round in the weaving, which is both technically challenging and aesthetically pleasing; this basket was most likely used as a storage basket within the domicile, leaning up against the wall. 23" x 19.5" - 59 x 49.5 cm.

Kuba Peoples, Congo. This is a good, representative example of a Kuba beaded belt; which interestingly, was made never to be seen - being completely covered by the folds from the top of the voluminous skirts worn by the Kuba. Made from woven raffia (raffia viniferis) and embellished with prized trade beads and revered cowrie shells ("diish" or "miish"), this wonderful example measures 39" (99 cm.) overall.

Tuareg Tribe, Mali. For lack of Pergo flooring or ceramic tile or the other niceties of 'Western Civilization' that we take for granted, the Tuareg have been making mats for at least a hundred years - although virtually none of that earliest material survives, never having been collected. This is a fine, old, Tuareg mat, using the geometric patterning and leather imbrication the Tuareg are noted for. We feel that this particular example is probably 'mid-century' and perhaps 'Pre-War'; interes... Click for details
