Bakuba Peoples, Congo. This rare textile is actually a little boy's skirt; among the Bakuba, both men and women wear these wrap-around garments, known as "Mapel" when male garments, and "Ntshak" denotes female. There are definite characteristics that differentiate between the two, among which are the distinct raffia 'pom-pons' or balls, which decorate the border; a male characteristic, this. Measuring 44" x 17 1/2" (114 x 44.5 cm.), this antique garment shows much wear and use - and shows rep... Click for details

Bakuba Peoples, Congo. This textile is a Royal woman's overskirt; "ntshak-" for a woman's garment, and in this example, a center field (the "Mboom") of cut-pile work in red. The border exhibits the 'Richileu' embroidery the Bakuba are noted for; a noted aspect of Ntshakabwiin skirts such as this one. Measuring approximately 65" x 23 1/2" (165 x 60 cm.), this Ntshakabwiin has some losses and could be cleaned - but how this must have been danced in, and proudly!

Bakuba Peoples, Congo. This garment is a Royal Queen's overskirt - "Ntshakakot" - defined by the undulating edge, unique to the Bakuba; also unique is the manner of their rolling the Ntshakakot for storage - interleaving the ruffled edges (see Cornet or Mort, also image). With the center field ("Mboom") of embroidered abstract designwork that the Bakuba are noted for and seen in their voluminous "Ntshakiswepys" which this "Ntshakakot" covered, and an edging in patterned cut-pile work, this is a ... Bakuba Peoples, Congo. This is a Royal Bushongo Queen's overskirt, called a "Ntshakisheen" - "Ntshak-" for a woman's garment, and the use of barkcloth denoting the type of Ntshak, hence "Ntshakisheen". Worn only by the highest ranking women at Court, this shows the traditional "Richileu" embroidered edge, contra-opposed black and white pieces of sewn barkcloth to the center - the "Mboom", etc. Interestingly, this example shows two pieces of red trade cloth (reserved for Royalty) which shows how ...
