Precolumbian hand painted and thinly modeled terracotta bowl from the Mayan culture of Mexico. The rim encircled with glyphs and a beautifully painted mayan head also encircled in a glyph. Height: 5 1/2 inches.
Donated by Mr. and Mrs Alan Brandt for the benefit of The Rudolf Wittkower Fellowship Fund, Department of Art History and Archaeology, Columbia University; sold by Sotheby Parke Bernet, Inc., New York in 1973.

A painted cylindrical vase featuring painted designs of trophy heads around the rim, from the Nazca culture of Pre-Columbian Peru, circa 100 A.D. - 300 A.D. Measuring approximately 5 1/2" tall and 4" wide, this short vase approaches the form of what Kroeber refers to as a waisted goblet, since the form tapers in near the top before slightly flaring out again at the rim. A rare Nazca Achira effigy vessel from Peru, ca. 300 – 500 AD. It is 7” high, 10-1/2” wide and depicts the rhizomes of this Canna family plant, which is still an important food source in certain Highlands areas. Painted overall in great detail. A rare Bahia whistle figure from Ecuador, ca. 500 BC – 300 AD. He is 7-1/4” tall, posed standing and is adorned with a large segmented necklace and complex ear ornaments. In excellent condition, with masterful appliqué workmanship, traces of fugitive paint and great tone on the two whistles hidden in his back.
