Ancient Pre-Columbian Moche III Portrait Vessel, ca. 400 - 700 A.D. Hollow molded terracotta head vessel of a man with headdress bearing jaguar legs and tail in low relief, worn over cloth strap, fitting closely around the face and tightened under the chin. Large earspools painted with scrolled wheel design. Face with acqualine nose and large eyes set in firm expression. 10"H, intact with minor paint loss, else excellent.

A very nice Maya "Swimmers" bowl from El Salvador, Ca. 600 - 900 A.D.This Mayan bowl has two "swimmer" figures stretched around the outside, below a row of glyphs. The swimmers are believed to represent the underworld. The row of glyphs is very interesting, with some head glyphs mixed in with the typical type glyphs that are found on Copador type bowls. From the northern coast of Peru, Moche I / Salinar Transitional, ca. 200 B.C. - 200 A.D. Earliest of all Moche art, this ancient pottery stirrup vessel depicts Ai Apec, Moche demon of the underworld. This beasty guy is also seen in Chavin and some Salinar vessels, but this is his earliest representation on Moche. Cream slip with brown, cartoon facial features. Interesting form! Ancient Pre-Columbian Multi-Lobed Vessel, from northern Peru, Vicus culture, ca. 100 B.C. - 100 A.D. Orangeware pottery vessel features four owl heads serving as the base, with round carrying handle at top. Added cream, organge and brown pigment decoration. Delightful example! Ancient Pre-Columbian Stirrup Vessel from Peru, Paracas region, ca. 300 B.C. - 100 A.D. Polychrome pottery vessel in the shape of a man playing pan pipes (see detail pic). The detailing is quite remarkable - polychrome accents for hair, headband, neck ornamentation, and single hand with delineated fingers holding pan pipes.
