This 5” tall stone mask (RG49) was found in the state of Vera Cruz along the Caribbean coast of east Mexico. Made from a greenish, tuffaceous, volcaniclastic, particulate rock, it has been pitted, scarred and otherwise battered around from centuries of exposure to the elements, the marks of past events that only add to its mystery and aura of power. Noted by some observers to have Olmecoid overtones, the mask, with weir-like mouth and heavy brows, is believed to date into the period c.300-1BC. A... Click for details

A wonderful Maya stone jaguar from Guatemala, ca. 550 – 900 AD. It is 9-1/2” long, 5-3/4” high and depicts the feline in a crouching position. The head is executed with features of a human skull and the paws are nicely detailed on the underside. Either an offering container for the Gods of the Underworld or the base for a carved wooden marker. This is a rare and highly desirable piece, with a professionally restored break that is barely visible.
