A sizeable Roman-Egyptian terracotta figure of a naked girl in a praying posture. Late 2nd – 3rd century AD. Made from a two-part mould, she sits with both hands raised, her legs bent and spread beneath her. She is wearing a necklace with three ring shape pendants, a single bracelet around her wrists, her hair is worn in an elaborate style. This is an Egyptian wood burial figure known as an ushabti. It is 7 1/2” high and dates to XIX-XX dynasty, 1320-1085BC. These were buried with a person in the expectation that they would serve the deceased in the afterlife and are sometimes known as “servant figures”.
