This is a Viking knife found in York England which comprised over half of England and was conquered by and inhabited by Vikings from 866-1067 AD. It is small, 3.95”(100.4mm) including the tang, but could easily slit a throat. It is accompanied by a Swedish language report showing a similar example. An important distinguishing feature of these early knives is that they were made without guards or pommels. For that reason, the base of the blade (where it meets the tang) is forged to a tapered tran... Click for details

After the Viking invasion of England in 866AD they lived more or less peacefully, occupying about half of what today is England. Among the artifacts from that time are beads which often are found along side metal objects and weapons discovered by metal detectors. For auction is a Viking mandrel wound blue bead. It is around 8.1 mm ( 1/3 inch) diameter. These are hand wound over a wire or mandrel and each has its own form as a result. The mandrel is coated with a release material, perhaps c... This is an English flaked flint weapon and tool of the Paleolithic period C.10,000-5000 BC. It came from Kent England and was part of a life time collection formed in the late 1800’s, which came to auction at Christies in London about 30 years ago. It is just over 1 1/2" across and has an applied collection number. A sharp cutting edge is rare in nature and early man discovered that flaking a flint shard produced a very fine one-so fine that they were later used for brain surgery. Thus it became... This is one of my favorite items because I can so easily identify with it. It is a European wedding band of the Dark Ages, about 800 AD. (We have a collection of wedding rings spanning over 2000 years!) It is a simple kind made for a peasant. It bronze, ring size 5, with a round center section suggestive of a stone mount. The wedding band had much the same function then as it does now. It separates the married from the available and the act of putting it on solidifies the bond. This one su... Click for details

It's been said that Vikings would do anything for beads, but there's something they liked even more-gold. And, what they liked best were gold beads! For auction is a handmade Viking gold bead from York England, dating 866 to 1067 A.D. It is hand hammered over a square mandrel and thus, has a square hole. While very skillfully made, it is hammer finished and not sanded or polished so that no gold be wasted. This bead is 3.2 mm (under 3/16”) diameter. It is as bright as the day it was made,... The Vikings traveled throughout Europe including the British Isles and gained from the technology of all the cultures which they encountered. They were very involved in grooming personal appearance and adornment and used beads extensively. Viking finds in may areas show large numbers of beads compared to other artifacts. This is a Viking bead dating to about 900 AD. This is a rare deep yellow example, 8.8 mm diameter (over ¼”). Yellow is often encountered, but opaque yellow is very rare. C... Click for details
