A rare Archaic Period Spartan bronze figure of the goddess Athena.
The goddess is depicted wearing a tall crested helmet and a peplos covered by the Aegis over her chest. Two exaggerated folds which protrude from the Aegis may be stylised representations of serpent's heads. The goddess's face is shown with the very severe features which are characteristic of Laconian workmanship.
The figure is crudely cast and although it is hollow, it has a thick matrix of metal inside the upper body.

A bronze ring with an oval bezel on which is incised a figure of a seated lion with its head turned to face to the rear. The lion's tongue is extended and the whole composition emulates decorative devices imported from the Near East which epitomise the Greek "Orientalising" style of design.
Greek, late 5th or early 4th Century BC
Intact, the decoration is somewhat clearer than the photographs imply.
Size: 2.1 cms diameter, 1.1 width of bezel.

This cute Greek bronze bird dates from the Geometric period, circa 8th-7th century B.C. This piece was cast in the lost wax process and it is solid with no hollow core. This bird is probably a duck or a goose, as the head has a flat bill, dotted eye, elongated neck, and plump body. The dotted eye feature is a Greek Geometric period convention of art that is seen on many figural objects as well. This piece is votive in nature, as pieces were hung as an offering to the gods in sacred oracle si... Click for details
