Each tribe of the Turkomen people developed its own distinctive designs for the heavy silver jewelry worn by most of the Central Asian nomadic groups. This heart-shaped piece, from the Teke subtribe, was an important part of their culture. Called an asyk, the gilded and incised heart was presented to a bride by the groom's parents. The triangle, an ancient symbol of female fertility, is the shape frequently chosen for Turkomen (Turkmen) amulets. This one, made of silver, is inlaid with 19 turquoise stones and centered with another triangle of onyx. The graceful abstract shape of this silver pendant from the nomadic Turkomen (Turkmen) who roamed across Central Asia suggests a bird in flight. Incised patterns on the silver are gilded and the piece is set with four cabochon cornelians. Seven small embossed tear-shaped pendants on chains give movement to the highly stylized bird. Most likely used on a belt or collar, this large, lacy starburst has five circular silver designs centered with a pink stone. The back side of the starburst is centered with a sturdy loop through which fabric or leather may have been pulled as part of a ceremonial costume. A finely modeled stucco head of Buddha mounted on a custom wooden stand. The head by itself measures 3 1/2" high x 2 1/8" wide x 2 3/4" deep. The stand is 3 7/8" high x 2 1/2" square.
