The kilim bags of the Central Asian Turkmen nomads were woven of camel or goat hair, sometimes combined with wool, on transportable looms. This tightly woven camel hair bag perhaps was made while the weaver was traveling by camel to a new location. Called jaloors or juvals, these rectangular kilim sacks were used to transport and store household effects and goods for trade. Antique Kirghiz wedding chain-stitch embroidery on black velvet, in the traditional format (3 embroidered borders surrounding a central silk ikat panel). This type of textile was used as ornament for the tent or yurt. This particular example measures 55" by 131", and is in generally good condition--minor restoration would help but is not imperative. Late nineteenth or early twentieth century.
