Fine relief carving on this Qing Period Chinese bed panel expresses symbolic wishes for good fortune. Made of beautifully grained hongmu (Chinese mahogany), the long panel (88 inches) is suitable for use over a king-sized bed. Stylized characters and traditional symbols, most likely chosen by the parents who commissioned the work, were used to bestow wishes on the newly married couple for long and happy lives. Carvings within the three rectangular sections demonstrate the Chinese love of homonym... Click for details

398 A.D. TWO EASTERN JIN DYNASTY TOMB TILES, one dated to the second year (AD 398) of Longan (AD 397-402) of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (AD 317-420). Not until the 1960s under Mao were a number of these tombs “liberated” in the present day cities of Nanjing, Zhenjiang and Danyan—all in Jiangsu Province in southern China where ethnic Han Chinese, fleeing northern nomadic invasions, had settled. These unglazed, molded tiles show the influence of earlier Han Dynasty tombs when pictures were origina... Click for details

This Wild Iris and Dragonfly carving is an early piece. It certainly predates the Art Nouveau Period in France;and yet the floral motif is very suggestive of this period. The size is 15High x 31Wide,The wood is cypress. Originally, the panel was covered with polychrome and lacquer of different colors. The age on this carving is probably 150 to 200 years old. This carving makes a good case for the Chinese.

This is an old Chinese carpentry tool. It was used the same as today's carpenter's "chalk line". The bowl would be filled with powdered charcoal and the string would be pulled through the bowl, and a straight line would be snapped. The string would be rewound by tuning the "crank handle". Older carpenters frequently made their own tool and the carving on this one is very well done, a dragons head floating in a wave pattern. Note the hand made string...very rare. This piece is almost 10" l... Click for details

These Chinese architectural window panels have a graceful and open pattern that is among the most beautiful of the thousands of fretwork designs that were created in China over the centuries. Poplar wood pieces, rounded on top and polished to a smooth sheen, are fitted together in an ingenious way to form an architectural pattern that has a simple yet compelling presence. Traditional Chinese joinery makes the long rectangles strong and solid without the use of nails or glue. Made in Shanxi Provi... Click for details
