Fine relief carving on this Qing Period Chinese bed panel expresses symbolic wishes for good fortune. Made of beautifully grained hongmu (Chinese mahogany), the long panel (88 inches) is suitable for use over a king-sized bed. This Wild Iris and Dragonfly carving is an early piece.It certainly predates the Art Nouveau Period in France;and yet the floral motif is very suggestive of this period.The size is 15High x 31Wide,The wood is cypress. Originally,the panel was covered with polychrome and lacquer of different colors.The age on this carving is probably 150 to 200 years old.This carving makes a good case for the Chinese.

This is an old Chinese carpentry tool. It was used the same as today's carpenter's "chalk line". The bowl would be filled with powdered charcoal and the string would be pulled through the bowl, and a straight line would be snapped. The string would be rewound by tuning the "crank handle". Older carpenters frequently made their own tool and the carving on this one is very well done, a dragons head floating in a wave pattern. Note the hand made string...very rare. One of the finer exterior architectural panels I have found, this 19th century or earlier elm relief carving has wonderfully detailed carvings that have been aged nicely in the raising of the grain typical of exposure to the elements. Approximately 9.5x36 inches, 24x91.5 centimeters.
