Fine relief carving on this Qing Period Chinese bed panel expresses symbolic wishes for good fortune. Made of beautifully grained hongmu (Chinese mahogany), the long panel (88 inches) is suitable for use over a king-sized bed. Stylized characters and traditional symbols, most likely chosen by the parents who commissioned the work, were used to bestow wishes on the newly married couple for long and happy lives. This Wild Iris and Dragonfly carving is an early piece.It certainly predates the Art Nouveau Period in France;and yet the floral motif is very suggestive of this period.The size is 15High x 31Wide,The wood is cypress. Originally,the panel was covered with polychrome and lacquer of different colors.The age on this carving is probably 150 to 200 years old.This carving makes a good case for the Chinese.
