A brass hanger at the top can be removed for further simplification. The mirror slips out of a slot at the top edge of the frame for easy cleaning. The panel is in excellent condition. This 19th century Chinese carved wood architectural panel, once part of a large, richly decorated canopied marriage bed, has been fitted with a mirror. The gilded carvings of a bat and two fish on the lower part of the panel are examples of the use in China during the Qing Dynasty of symbols derived from homonyms to convey important wishes for the future. The similar sounds of the characters for "bat" and "happiness," both pronounced "fu," resulted in a fondness for bat carvings that were hoped ... Click for details

The unusual fretwork on this two-panel screen is more reminiscent of an old European cathedral than 18th century Hubei Province in China where it originated. Although at first glance it looks plain, almost severe, its appeal is in the details. The 12 vertical bars on each panel are separated with 36 small carved designs in two different shapes--one a diamond shape centered with a tiny flower, the other a cross centered with a circle. The vertical bars are pegged top and bottom into a series of c... Click for details

A bearded scholar gestures with a fan in this late 19th century Chinese relief carving. In old China, a fan often was used by scholars and officials as part of a gesture to emphasize a special point. Two visitors, a man and a woman, are shown outside the scholar's studio, which is suggested by a bit of roofline, window and a vase of flowers. Carved below the roundel is stylized bat, symbol of good fortune. A hanger has been added to the carving, which may have been an element in a large architec... Click for details

The three Chinese star gods of longevity, prosperity and happiness are the central figures of this late 19th century relief carving. In this carving, the star gods are accompanied by playing children and attendants carrying food and money. Th... Click for details

An official on a chilin, a mythical lion-like animal used as a symbol of high rank in China, is the central figure on this late Qing Dynasty lacquered and gilded wood carving. This piece originally may have been a panel in a temple door, or it could be one of the surviving elements of a piece of fine old furniture. The term "temple carv... Click for details
