Made from ox horn, and shaped into a perfectly balanced shoehorn, this antique Chinese folk art artifact serves in both form and function. There is a delicately carved design on the back. The handle part of the horn has eyes carved so that the piece takes the shape of an animal and there is a hole carved so that the shoehorn can be hung from a cord. I vaguely remember hearing that the Chinese inventing the shoehorn, but have not been able to verify this as historic fact.

A very rare Chinese carved Wax seal with sage holding a fly wisk with one hand and stroking his beard with the other. The seal stamp is so intricately carved, it is just amazing. I have been told that it is the stamp of a business in China, so it is an authentic, very old, used piece made for Chinese use, not for export. Measures 1 1/2" long and 1 3/4" high. Excellent condition with no missing pieces, damages, or breaks. Dates 19th-19th century. Return privilege providing item returned in sent c... Click for details

This antique Chinese circular lidded container was made from a single valuable horn. It is a tribute to both the horn and the skill of the craftsman. Horn can be cut, and carved, but it is not a flexible material.
According to my Chinese friends, the thinner and more translucent the horn, the more it is valued. The cross-section of an ox (buffalo)horn is oval, but a Yak horn is circular. This is a prized horn. Approx 4" high and 2.5" diameter.

This horn was sold to me as being used for giving animals medicine but I suspect from the carved shape of the open end that it was used for a scoop, possibly for tea or other herbs. The carving is of the front of a horse with his feet on top of a dragons head. The horn has a translucent quality which makes it more valuable in Chinese Ethnic Minority societies. The closed carved end is darkened from years of being handled. Being 6.5" long and in excellant condition, it is a fine ethnographic... Click for details
