This is an ivory toggle showing two huans, a mythical Chinese animal. (It could also depict two lions..) The two "huan" are chasing each other. The carving is truly great: every line that should be there is there. This is an old toggle and as such is not in perfect condition. It seems to have a small nick in one paw, I believe. Price reflects this lacunae.

A superb circa 1890 Chinese elephant ivory carving of Kwanyin with a nude boy at her feet. Carved from one solid piece of tusk this carving is extremely well done down to the stream of water pouring from her vase. It is large standing 14 1/2 inches tall on the attached wooden stand and standing 11 3/4 inches for the ivory alone. There is no damage and no restorations. Please note, however, that the stand is a bit loose on the ivory.

An outstanding pair of hand carved late 19th c ivory Foo dogs. Standing on the traditional brocade ball, the male has two pups climbing on and over him, while his mate has three pups. Intricately carved ribbons wrap their way through the dogs’ mouths and around their bodies. The base is hand carved with dragons, clouds, stylized phoenix feathers, and a “Greek key” design. Originally there was a wooden base attached, but it had been removed, probably to expose the mark on the bottom. They cou... Click for details
